If you’ve been to a bookstore lately you might have noticed the latest craze: coloring books for adults. Sales are booming, and the Amazon.com top 20 list of best selling books currently has seven coloring books on the list. Why are adults drawn to coloring books, and how can you get started?
According to Linda Turner, a licensed creative arts psychotherapist in Manhattan, coloring is a calming activity. “If you are really with it, if you are really in the presence of coloring the colors and just being with the art, it is a wonderful way to support calming and presence and relaxation,” she told AFP. She added that
“These coloring books, they look adult, they look sophisticated… and they are going to create, and they are going to be present in the moment and have fun… In ways that are safe for them.”
So how can you get started with this hot new trend? For starters, turn to your local public library. Many libraries are hosting coloring programs for all ages. This low cost inter-generational activity is drawing crowds!
You can also search the internet for free coloring pages for adults. The website Coloring Pages for Adults has hundreds of free pages you can download and save to color in your free time.
