Sanctuary Yoga is a free weekly multilevel Hatha yoga class. Classes focus on breathing and balance; using classic and new yoga repertoire to stretch and strengthen body and mind.
Instructor and founder Alia Bartlett, has been teaching yoga since 2009. She is a cardiology nurse going on 10 years. Alia lives with her husband, Pastor Scott Bartlett and their cat Sasquatch. She enjoys creating music and dancing. We caught up with her and asked to share her yoga story.
I’ve been doing yoga for over 20 years. I started in a small class taught by my longtime friend Koren Paalman. Through the years I continued primarily home practice guided by DVDs and videos. In 2006 I decided to enrich my understanding by taking an immersive yoga teacher training. I keep coming back to the mat because the practice is healing and centering on many levels. It has helped heal a back injury, it helps me calmly observe the fluctuations of the mind and I keep finding new awareness and control over small muscles of the body. While I love the analytical pursuit of alignment and precision, meditation practice helps avoid unnecessary striving. After every practice I feel better.
I’ve found teaching yoga so rewarding, this consistent service. Every week I can offer my time and my heart, free of expectation. While there is so much to be said about style and personality preference of a certain teacher, I find that there is so much wisdom in the practice itself. In this way I am freed from unnecessary concerns and marketing of my ego. People come and return because the practice itself is so rich. Of course the sacred space of the church holds and cultivates benefits as well. People are free to sit in the pews and meditate. Stain glass windows and presence of an altar assist in separating the time you spend as sacred. We dedicate each practice to honoring that peace we have created within, pray for peace for our loved ones and for all beings.
