Some things never go out of style, like midcentury furniture. Unfortunately, it does age and break. Lucky for us, there is a craftsman (who is also a Shortomatic fan) who can restore midcentury furniture to its former glory! Alfie Hume, of Hume Modern, has been called “one of the country’s best” midcentury modern furniture restorers by The New York Times. His passion for restoring furniture and attention to detail is undoubtedly what makes him the best. We met Alfie because of his passion of Shortomatic board shorts. We loved his passion and furniture so much that we thought we would share it here.
A British transplant who now lives and works in Venice, California, Alfie Hume told Variety that “My father used to say that my toys didn’t come with instructions,” he says. “They came with destructions.” This ability to take things apart and put them together translated well into his future career. As an authorized Herman Miller Inc. restorer, he has over a decade of experience taking apart, restoring, and preserving vintage Eames furniture.
Take this Eames Fiberglass Shell Rocker for example. What a beauty, isn’t it? The experts at Hume Modern blasted rust and stains off the piece, polished the frame, and professionally restored the wood to create a piece that is simply stunning.
Production designer Jeannine Oppewall, who amassed a midcentury furniture collection while scouting yard sales and flea markets for pieces to use on film sets, raves about Hume Modern, saying, “Alfie knows these pieces backward, forward and inside out,” she says. “He gives great advice about how to preserve the value of your investments.”
Hume Modern, much like the team at Anymatic, emphasizes personal style with a custom touch. Customers can receive a personalized quote online and then ship their pieces to him. Here’s a piece that was sent to the pros at Hume to restore. Wait till you see the after picture here! It’s nothing short of fabulous.
We mentioned that Alfie is a Shortomatic fan! Here is a photo of Alfie Hume on a jet ski in Croatia wearing his Shortomatic design for the Euro Cup Finals. He is English and supports his country with the St George flag! You can show off your favorite Euro Cup team on a pair of board shorts as well. Just upload any design at Shortomatic.
